Half Day Fishing
Maybe you guys can take it up on the northern Atlantic and Pacific coasts, but in the Southeast, a whole day of fishing in this unbearable summer heat can really wear a fellow out. That's why I usually only fish a half day during the summer. Come to think of it, I usually only fish a half day at any time! I used to fish all day long, from daybreak until sunset, drive two hours to get home, clean the boat and the fish and end up getting to bed around midnight. And it took me quite a few years to realize that I could catch the same number of fish and only fish a half day! It's called fishing the tide. I sat down and calculated just when during the day I caught most of my fish. Invariably it turned out to be either on the incoming or the outgoing tide. Then I pieced together the places I fished and kept track of what tide was the best. After that exercise, it was easy. I may still rise at 4AM to make it to the ramp before daybreak, but it's because the tide I am fishing is right at that time. On those days, I am home at noon, cleaned up and cooking fish on the grill that afternoon! Some days, I may not leave the house until noon. I'll fish the afternoon because the tide was right! I still catch about the same number of fish, only I come home and have time to spend doing other "required" things around the house. All this is great for inshore fishing. As soon as I figure out how to fish a half day offshore, I'll let you know! I can't bring myself to leave the blue water that quickly! How about you? Do you fish all day, but only catch for half a day?Half Day Fishing originally appeared on About.com Saltwater Fishing on Wednesday, July 28th, 2010 at 05:40:34.Permalink | Comment | Email this

Boat Ramp Etiquette
Last week's Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament brought out the "grinch" in a lot of people as they faced discourteous boaters at the launch ramp. Professionals who have no time for local anglers took the scarce dock space (breaking the posted law) as hundreds of boats tried to launch in the pre-dawn morning. It was ugly, and tempers were on edge. If people would simply follow a few common sense rules, and respect other anglers, it could go a lot smoother. This applies to any launch site on any given summer weekend.Boat Ramp Etiquette originally appeared on About.com Saltwater Fishing on Monday, July 26th, 2010 at 05:57:41.Permalink | Comment | Email this

Stuart Wins GJKT
In what was once billed as the world's largest fishing tournament, Captain Russell Stuart aboard the "Seafood Kitchen" weighed a 45.75-pound king mackerel on the first day of the Greater Jacksonville Kingfish Tournament.  That fish held  top spot for the second day as well, giving Stuart the top prize, a boat, motor and trailer valued at over $38,000. The two day aggregate (two fish total weight) was won by Captain Jerry Carter on the "Reel Quick" boat.  His prize was a similar boat rig also valued at over $38,000. 351 boats fished the first day of the event, the lowest number of entrants in tournament history - in years past, entries typically bounced around the 1000 mark.  Some blame the economy for the shortfall; others point to tropical storm Bonnie that was brewing to the southeast.  More than a handful of anglers blame the poor handling of a weigh-in/registration fiasco a couple of years ago.  Entries have gone down each year since that happened.  Whatever the reason, the charity that this event sponsors, Jacksonville Marine Charities, Inc,  will be hurting this coming year. For the first time, a cobia category was included.  Cobia are often caught while fishing for king mackerel, and in an effort many believe to attract more entrants, prizes were awarded for the three largest cobia.  I personally hate to see this turn with the tournament.  In years past, cobia that were caught were usually released unharmed.  Putting a price on them in future events will lead every boat that catches one to bring it to the scales.  While king mackerel are abundant and are prolific breeders, cobia are not.  Just like the situation with grouper and red snapper, the cobia population could be hit if tournaments start going after them.  Just my opinion!Stuart Wins GJKT originally appeared on About.com Saltwater Fishing on Sunday, July 25th, 2010 at 07:41:17.Permalink | Comment | Email this

Dog Days Fishing
Fishing in hot weather can be really tough. As hot as it has been, there are still some ways to be a successful angler. Fish are just like humans in one respect - they always want to be in comfortable surrounds - and that means water temperature. Paying attention to the heat and the water conditions, plays an important part in that success...Dog Days Fishing originally appeared on About.com Saltwater Fishing on Tuesday, July 20th, 2010 at 05:25:26.Permalink | Comment | Email this
